IEW - Now that we are starting to write our IEW papers, I wanted to go over somethings to hopefully help at home. They are to make the paper their own. The main points need to be followed but they need to put it in their own words.
Rough Draft/Proofread – All papers must be double spaced. The rough draft is a rough draft. Please do not have the kids erase and correct their errors. Once they finished writing the paper, please proofread the paper. Correct the misspelling, punctuation, and capitalization by writing the correction in red or a different color. The reason the papers are double spaced is to allow room for the correction to be written in without erasing. Do not have them rewrite this paper yet. This will be rewritten the next day in class.
Checklist – The checklist is found at the end of each weeks lesson in the IEW book. This is not for you to grade your child's paper but as a help so you know when you are proofreading if your child has included everything that should be in the paper. In the past Mrs. Torres has had some wonderful papers turned in but the grade is failing because they did not follow the checklist. All items on the checklist, elements of style, dress ups, vocabulary words, need to be underlined and labeled in the left or right margin. It will say on the checklist which side to label. They only need to underline and label one of each item listed.
Final Draft – We start the final draft on next week. Please send the proofread rough draft to school so they can start to copy and make the corrections into a final paper. This final draft is the one that will be turned on for a grade.
Poetry- We are working on a poem this week. This is a cumulative, oral program meant to develop linguistic and oratory skills. Students should be listening to the poems and reciting along, rather than reading (it might help to read the first few times, but after that, listening is much more helpful.) Once we've mastered the first poem, you will see the second poem listed on the blog and then your practice becomes both poems 1 and 2; we'll then move on to 1-3, etc. Assessments will be of a less formal nature in class throughout the quarter. Remember, the emphasis here is on being enthusiastic and expressive with our recitations. Focus should be on inflection, volume, tone of voice, eye contact, etc. We'll be working on this frequently in class as well :)
