Reading
Journal: The
reading journals will be formatted differently for the next few
books. Reading and IEW will parallel one another as we explore story
elements: setting, characters, plot (conflict and resolution) and
themes. The journal will not have specific pages corresponding with
each chapter. Students should complete any sections that pertain to
the daily reading assignment.
Science
presentation: All
students are required to prepare a brief science report to present to
the class on Thursday, September 28. They can pick any topic in
chapters 1-3. I will encourage the class to choose a variety of
topics. Student should consider the following as they prepare: what
they learned, what intrigued them, how this impacts our lives, and
why they think God chose to design our world this way. The
presentation needs to include at least 3 thoughtful sentences.
Students should write the sentences down on note cards or a
piece of paper which will be turned in afterwards. They will be
allowed to use their cards/paper during the presentation but should
practice looking up after each sentence. They may bring a visual aid
if desired. This will be a test grade. Two presentation examples
are given below:
Tides:
I have been to the beach and love playing in the ocean that comes up
on the beach. I learned that the reason the ocean comes up on the
beach is because of tides. Low tides and high tides are caused by the
moon and the earth moving. The movements of the earth and moon change how the moon’s
gravity pulls on the ocean’s water. That changes the amount of water
that flow onto the beach. I think that it is amazing how God made the
moon effect the oceans on Earth.
Killer
Whales: Killer whales are my favorite animal. They are really called
orcas. Orcas live in family groups their whole lives. They are
amazing hunters. They are also very smart. Many orcas are trained to
perform tricks at shows. I’m surprised that these hunters can be so
friendly to humans. Orcas are wonderful!
